Shortcut to Specific Products
Notes on Shunt Quality
While seemingly basic, uncomplicated products, testing shunts are critical to the proper operation of the signal system. In keeping with this criticality, every Shunt manufactured by S&C Distribution Company, including zero ohm shunts, is assigned a Serial Number and is tested for proper value or values prior to shipment. The test results are recorded by Serial Number, in a permanent record, for traceability.
Further, every aspect of our Shunt design has an engineering justification. Being aware of significant shortfalls in resistance accuracy and durability of other shunt products, we have reviewed our designs to eliminate, or design countermeasures for, every point where it would be possible for resistance to accumulate. These efforts have resulted in Shunts that, hand tight, will shunt your track circuits "the first time, every time", according to our many satisfied customers. On the subject of durability, one railroad considers our Shunts "ten year service life shunts".
How to Specify Shunt Resistance
With each of the below listed type of testing shunts where resistance values are involved note that there is one ordering reference for each type of connector (head-of-rail clamp, base-of-rail clamp), regardless of shunt resistance. Also note that within that ordering reference are blank spaces represented by dashed underscore lines ( _ _ ). This group of blank spaces is where you indicate the resistance value desired. Where two resistances are available in one shunt, two sets of dashed underscore lines are presented.
We have configured the ordering reference in this way because we offer an extensive line of standard resistances, and can produce a shunt with virtually any resistance value you might request. Rather than create pages of ordering references, the only variation to which would be the resistance value itself, we let you fill in the blanks as appropriate. At present our standard resistance values are:
- 0.06 ohms
- 0.10 ohms
- 0.15 ohms
- 0.20 ohms
- 0.25 ohms
- 2.00 ohms
When completing the ordering reference to place your order, fill in the blanks with numbers in the exact sequences shown above. Do not include the decimal point. For example a 0.06 ohm shunt value would read: 0 6. If you need a resistance other than one of the values listed above, simply specify the value in the same sequence as shown. For example a 0.25 ohm shunt value would read: 2 5. If the value you require is two ohms (2:0) show it as "2X". Note that if you order a value other than one of those listed above, the lead time is 45 days to 60 days ARO. Please contact us for ordering instructions. Otherwise our Shunts are generally shipped from stock.

S&C Railroad Grade Shunt Clamps bring strength and conductivity that have not been achieved in shunt clamps before, but should have been. They also introduce a new concept; maintainability that does not compromise shunt reliability. And, to address today's conditions our base-of-rail clamps are shaped to match the rail base to prevent "walking" and our head-of-rail clamps have the widest reach and longest legs to permit accommodation of the worst lipped-over rail, yet will clamp to rail sections from 70 lb. to 140 lb. Our Base of Rail Clamp has been reconfigured to be "Easy-On." The Connector for the shunt wire also serves as a handle, permitting the user to shove the clamp onto the rail with a very minimum, usually no, digging away of ballast. Clearance between rail and ballast requirements have been reduced to the absolute minimum. Clamps can be ordered separately.

506CB Series Head of Rail Clamp Testing Shunts
|
A shunt configuration developed in response to customer request, these, clamp-type testing shunts depart from the traditional by placing the Resistor Bracket on a standoff from one of the head-of-rail clamps. This design moves the Resistor Bracket out of the middle of the shunt wire, significantly reducing the potential of the Bracket to snag, being damaged, etc. It also makes it easier to vary the resistance values, by placing the adjustment point at top-of-rail height, rather than on the ground. In addition to being unique, these shunts are built to the usual S&C specification; heavy-duty, railroad grade, highly accurate and reliable.

506P Series Probe Testing Shunts
A new way to connect testing shunts to the rail temporarily and easily. 506P Shunts (AC-Only and single resistance shunts shown to the left) utilize the probe concept, providing railroad-durable 12.5 inch Probes (including handle length with tips that are file hard. The 12 inch length makes reaching rail to rail with enough leverage to effect a reliable shunt doable, and the hardened tips insure long service life. Probes are hard tool chromed after fabrication and heat treating for resistance to rust, corrosion, etc.
Our Probe Shunts are especially helpful in making "rolling" shunt and shunt fouling tests. Unique design assures extremely low probability of resistance variation within the Shunt. Very close electrical tolerances make these tools highly accurate. Every Shunt furnished by S&C Distribution Company is factory tested for proper resistance value(s). Each Shunt is serial numbered and the values of resistance are recorded with the serial number for traceability.
Probe Shunts come in several configurations: Zero ohm (hardwire), switchable with test nut between Zero ohm and one or two common testing resistances and in an AC-Only configuration for specialized crossing warning system testing applications.

516 AC-Only Testing Shunts
AC-Only Shunts can permit the set-up and testing of audio frequency and motion responsive track circuits without disrupting the operation of DC train detection track circuits. When used safely and carefully (see instructions furnished with the Shunts) this capability can significantly improve a signalman's productivity and improve overall maintenance of crossing warning systems. A large, bright red warning label, incorporating key safety information contained in the instructions, is firmly mounted to the shunt cartridge. Shunts come with bright orange wire and either File Handles, Dual-Blade Handles, Warren Fast Shunt Handles (see following section for description of Warren Fast Shunt) and Head or Base-of-Rail Clamps. Note that, due to the safety implications should this Shunt be accidentally left on the track, we recommend against using this Shunt with Base-of-Rail Clamps.

Warren Fast Shunt
A very old idea resurrected by S&C Distribution Company, in response to considerable interest from signalmen. This concept greatly facilitates making quick on and off shunts required for shunt fouling tests, series shunting during cutovers, and for making shunt tests to confirm circuit performance during required monthly, quarterly and annual tests. Come in two handle configurations: with operating handles approximately 14 inches (3.0 lbs) and 38 inches (6.0 lbs) long. Any shunt wire manufactured by S&C Distribution Company can be equipped with these handles.

506 Circuit Testing Shunt with Meter
|
OS, and other track circuit tests, can take two people and/or lots of time reading with your voltmeter. Getting track and time to make the tests can be difficult. Getting enough time to complete the tests can be even more difficult. With the Circuit Testing Shunt with Meter, the whole process takes place at the shunt location, in seconds. It can also be used in many other track voltage reading applications. Shown to the left, the 506 Circuit Testing Shunt with Meter includes an S&C, Warren Fast Shunt (your choice of 14 inch or 38 inch handles - 14 inch handles shown) with your choice of resistances, and built-in meter leads with an S&C, AC/DC analog, low-temperature (-40 deg.) Voltmeter. Additional details are in the Ordering Information section below. Normal application is as follows:
- Open the gold test nut for the shunt resistance desired (usually 0.06 ohms).
- Open your Testing Shunt with the "Open" gold test nut, so that no shunt is available.
- Hook a Warren Fast Shunt Handle over each rail. Read the track voltage, unshunted, with the meter that automatically senses whether it is reading AC or DC volts, and reads it correctly.
- Close the "Open" gold test nut. You get an immediate shunt at the resistance value you have selected. The weight of the handles keeps the shunt properly connected.
- Read the shunted track voltage, if any. Go to lower scales on meter to be sure.
- Your OS or other Circuit Test is completed. Record data required and move on.
|
Accurate track circuit tests are achieved in seconds. You have been looking for ways to improve the productivity of routine but required tests, without sacrificing accuracy, reliability and safety. A small upfront investment in this Shunt will pay itself back many, many times over.
Retro-fit Kits are available for people who want to convert their existing Warren Fast Shunt to one that has the built-in, voltage reading capability. See ordering information below for details.
Ordering Information
Specify resistance value desired by replacing parenthesis in ordering reference with value. Shunt resistances available include; 0.06, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25. Shunts with 14 in. handles also include protective, HD Shunt Bag. Note that multiple resistance or non-listed resistance shunts can be supplied on special order.

506 Quick Kit
Shunt fouling tests, and other track circuit tests, can take two people and/or lots of time screwing down a shunt, then communicating with someone in the bungalow, or walking to the bungalow or trying to reach rail to rail to take reading with your voltmeter, then disconnecting the shunt. Getting track and time to make the tests is difficult. Getting enough time to complete the tests is even more difficult. Reduce the time to seconds per test with our 506 Quick Kit.
Shown at the left, the 506 Quick Kit includes an S&C, Warren Fast Shunt (your choice of 14 inch or 38 inch handles - 14 inch handles shown) with your choice of resistances, and a set of S&C Track Probes for taking track circuit voltage readings with your VOM. With the Quick Kit, the whole process takes place at the shunt location, in seconds. VOM shown above is not supplied. A zippered bag for corralling the Warren Fast Shunt and the Track Probes is available, Part Number: 506BZB.

506WOR Series Web of Rail Shunts
Heavily head-worn and lipped-over rail are facts of life in today's signaling environment. Also, Southern Pacific used a lot of Head Free rail that may still be in service. This rail can be difficult to accommodate with head of rail clamps. The usual alternative for shunting track circuits is to use a shunt with base of rail clamps. Winter and ballast conditions can render the base of rail clamp-equipped shunts undesirable for testing and adjusting track circuits.
S&C Distribution Company is pleased to offer our 506WOR Series of testing shunts, shown here, with a single resistance and zero ohm bracket. The web of rail clamps that are the primary feature of these shunts effectively span heavily head-worn and lipped over rail. They will accommodate rail from 70 lb. to 140 lb. They are also sturdy enough that they will not distort as they are tightened on the rail, resulting in a "first time, every time" shunt of track circuits, as is a common feature with all of our shunts.
Because we have designed our Web of Rail Clamps to employ the same Connector we use with our head of rail clamps shunts, the web of rail and head of rail clamps can be interchanged on the same shunt wire. We offer the WOR Clamps, less connectors, as a separate item for purchase by customers who already have our Head of Rail Clamp Shunts.

506BS Bumper Shunt For M/W Applications
The 506BS Bumper Shunt allows M/W vehicles of all types to carry their own shunt to isolate frog and IJ replacement from crossing warning systems, "occupy" track as back-up protection to track and time authority, etc. If mental lapses cause the track workers to leave the location without removing the shunt from the track, vehicle movement will cause the plug completing the Zero ohm shunt to disengage. When the plug disconnects the shunt is opened, effectively "removing" it from the track circuit.
Construction is heavy duty with wires leaving the male plug supported with a strain-relief cable clip. Female plug is mounted to a bracket designed to swivel on the shoulder of the mounting bolt. This assembly is permantently mounted to the track work vehicle. Shunt comes complete with the widely respected S&C Base-of-Rail or Head-of-Rail Clamps, shoulder mounting bolt and hardware and heavy duty, canvas carry bag to corral the wire/plug/clamp assembly when not in use.
Highly flexible No. 6 AWG welding cable is used to provide maximum conductivity, flexibility and ease of use. Shunt wires are safety orange. Shunts come with S&C railroad-grade base-of-rail clamps or head-of-rail clamps (see separate catalog section for detail on clamps).

506F Series Flag Shunts For M/W Applications
The 506F Series Flag Shunts allow M/W workers to carry their own shunt to isolate frog and IJ replacements from crossing warning systems, "occupy" track as back-up protection to track and time authority, etc., and to mark their occupancy with a flag that can be locked to the rail. Flag Shunts can be purchased with fixed or removable flag/staff assemblies and with painted or reflectorized flags. Head or Base of Rail Clamps are available with either T Screws or square head set screws that make unauthorized removal of the clamps more difficult. Flag reads "STOP", white letters on red painted or reflectorized background.
Alternatively, a Shunt (Lock Shunt) can be purchased with an integral locking clamp only, if a flag is not desired. The same Shunt Clamp options are available with the Lock Shunt as are available with the Flag Shunt.
Construction is heavy duty and High Viz (safety orange Shunt Wire and bright yellow heat shrink on the backs of the Head of Rail Clamps). Highly flexible No. 6 AWG welding cable is used to provide maximum conductivity, flexibility and ease of use. Shunts come with S&C railroad-grade base-of-rail clamps ore head-of-rail clamps (see separate catalog section for detail on clamps). Heavy duty carry bag is available for Shunt or Clamp and Shunt assembly.

506MS Series Multiple Resistance Shunts
Multiple resistance shunts have been developed to permit precise track circuit tests and adjustments. Most such shunts require various combinations of resistance values to "build" the resistances required. S&C Distribution Company has simplified the process by supplying the most commonly required range of resistances individually, each of which is accessed by opening a single gold nut test switch. Resistances beyond those supplied can be "built" by opening combinations ow switches. Resistances supplied in the 506MS-1 are:
- Zero (hardwire)
- .06 Ohm
- .10 Ohm
- .15 Ohm
- .20 Ohm
- .25 Ohm
- 1.00 Ohm
- 1.20 Ohm
- 1.30 Ohm
- 1.40 Ohm
|
Values other than the above are available, following development time.
Current capacities of the shunts range from 27 amps for the .06 ohm shunt, to 5.58 amps for the 1.40 ohm shunt.
This Shunt can be furnished with base, head-of-rail, web-of-rail, or imbedded rail clamps, Track Probes, Files and 38 inch Warren Fast Shunt Handles. A heavy-duty Carry Bag (506ZB or 506BZB) is also available for transport and storage of all except the shunt with the 38 inch Warren Fast Shunt Handles.

506-(_ _)RS Style C Circuit Maintenance Tool
Easy to use tool for maintaining and trouble-shooting AC/DC, Style C Track Circuits. Our 506-(_ _)RS Circuit Maintenance Tool includes a specified resistance value (usually 0.06 ohms) and zero ohm shunts for making adjustments and testing tack circuits for proper train detection. It also includes a diode to allow you to use the Tool as a substitute diode for determining the source of the failure causing the warning lights and bells to ring without the train present. (Consult instructions for details of use).
When ordering the Tool, note that the proper resistance value to select for essentially all freight railroad applications is .06 ohms. Other resistance values offered are for specialized applications, generally in the transit world. The Circuit Maintenance Tool comes with either Base or Head of Rail Clamps that allow you to attach the Tool to the track. If ordered with Base of Rail Clamps, you can leave the Tool in-track to substitute for a failed track diode while you await a replacement. Trains will pass over it with no problem.
Accurate train circuit tests are achieved in minutes. You have been looking a way to take the mystery out of AC/DC track circuit trouble-shooting, quickly. A small upfront investment will pay itself back many times over.
We offer a heavy-duty canvas carrying bag to protect the Tool between use and to enhance portability.
